Beavers fall 6-1 in Culver's Camp Randall Hockey Classic MADISON, Wis. - The Bemidji State University women's hockey team dropped Saturday's outdoor game to the University of Wisconsin 6-1 at Camp Randall Stadium.
With the loss BSU drops to 8-14-7 (7-9-7-3 WCHA) and loses its fourth place standing in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.
"We were disappointed that we didn't have as much jump as Wisconsin did in a critical game for deciding a home-playoff berth," said head coach Steve Sertich. "It doesn't matter if we lost by five or by one, we didn't get any points today. We have to figure out a way to rebound tomorrow and come out of Madison with some points."
Wisconsin jumped out on top first and didn't let up. The first Badger goal came on a Carolyne Prevost breakaway in the first three minutes of the game. The first period ended with a two-goal deficit for the Beavers. The Badgers out-shot Bemidji State 13-2 in the period.
The story of the second period didn't change much as the Badgers netted two more goals, one coming from a power play.
BSU played the best hockey of the day in the third period putting more shots on net in the third than the first two periods combined. Jamie Hatheway (Fr., For., Trenton, Ontario) scored her first collegiate goal after one-timing a loose puck in the slot. Hatheway put the puck top shelf over the UW's goalie Becca Ruegsegger's glove.
"We dumped the puck into the corner, [Emily] Erickson won the one-on-one battle and threw the puck into high slot to me," Hatheway said. "Being outside and in the outdoor game couldn't have been a better place to get my first goal."
The game would come to an end with Wisconsin dominating the shots department 42-14. Alana McElhinney (So., G., Calgary, Alberta) was between the pipes for the Beavers in the outdoor game. Her 36 saves is the second-most she's made since making 38 saves against then-number-one Mercyhurst on Oct. 3, 2009.
There have now been 17 players so far this season to record points for the Beavers.

BSU takes a point at St. Cloud ST. CLOUD, Minn. - The Bemidji State women's hockey team got off to a 2-0 lead in the first Friday night, but the Huskies came back with three straight goals to take the 3-2 win at the National Hockey Center.
Annie Bauerfeld got the Beavers on the board seven minutes into the first period. Erin Cody and Franny Dorr were credited with the assists. It was Bauerfeld’s fifth goal of the season.
The Beavers got their second goal with help from their netminder Alana McElhinney who found Kim Lieder ahead. Lieder then passed it up to Cody who put away her 15th goal of the season. The goal was Cody's 64th career point.
McElhinney's assist on the goal puts her in elite company. She becomes only the fourth goalie in BSU women’s hockey history to record a point. Past goalies with points in their careers at BSU include: Jill Luebke (2A), Janet Hicks (1A) and Bre Dedrickson (1A).
After a quick turn around, the Beavers faced-off with the Huskies Saturday afternoon in a 2:07 start.
The Beavers once again got on the scoreboard first. Erin Cody scored on just the second shot of the game at the 6:27 mark of the first period. Annie Bauerfeld and Franny Dorr would both record assists on the play. However, the Huskies answered back 10 minutes later to tie it up 1-1 before the end of the first period..
In the second period the Huskies would take the 2-1 lead. With 11 seconds left in the second period, Dorr received a pass from Bauerfeld to tie up the game once again 2-2 at the end of two periods. Erika Wheelhouse was also credited with an assist on the play.
In the third period, St. Cloud would score the only power play goal of the weekend to go up 3-2. With less than a minute left in regulation, the Beavers pulled McElhinney out of the net for the extra attacker. Dorr would bring the puck in on the left wing and find Bauerfeld to the right. Dorr's nifty pass to Bauerfeld set up the game tying goal with just 24 seconds remaining in the game. Wheelhouse again picked up an assist on the goal.
In the overtime period, McElhinney turned away four shots on goal to shut out the Huskies and secure a point on the weekend.
For the fourth straight shootout, the Beavers would find themselves on the losing end. The Huskies walked away with the extra point winning the shootout 1-0 in three rounds. The Beavers are 3 & 4 this season in the shootout and have entered into the most rounds of shootout than any other team in the WCHA, having participated in 36 rounds in seven shootouts.
Erin Cody has scored 12 goals and tallied four assists in the past 12 games.
Freshman defender Erika Wheelhouse recorded her fourth multi-point game of the year notching two assists. She leads all freshmen and all defenders in scoring with 13 points and leads the team in assists (13).
The game was Franny Dorr's first multi-point game of her career.
Only picking up one point on the weekend, Bemidji State (8-13-7, 7-8-7-3 WCHA) now sits in fourth place in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association with 24 points.
